Brazil Car Sales Make Shy Comeback in February
New vehicle sales in Brazil rebounded by 2.2% from the prior month to 165 thousand units in February 2024, after plunging 34.9% in January. This positive performance reflects an improvement in credit conditions due to the decrease in interest rates, as well as strong demand from car rental companies. In the meantime, exports of vehicles surged 62.7% to 30.7 thousand units in February. Year-on-year, new vehicle registrations grew 27.1% while exports declined 14.1%.

New vehicle sales in Brazil tumbled by 34.9% from the prior month to 162 thousand units in January 2024, after rising by 16.9% in December. In the meantime, exports of vehicles declined 26.6% to 19 thousand units in January. Year-on-year, new vehicle registrations grew 13.1% while exports plunged 43%. According to Anfavea, the decrease in export sales volume is attributed to the economic slowdown in the main consumer markets for vehicles manufactured in Brazil, namely Argentina, Chile, and Colombia.

Brazil Auto Sales Rise Nearly 17% MoM in December
New vehicle sales in Brazil jumped by 16.9% from the prior month to 249 thousand units in December 2023, after declining 2.4% in November. This represents the highest reading since 2019, "driven by rental companies that registered 75 thousand vehicles, 30 thousand more than the yearly average, and by promotions for electric vehicles before the return of the Import Tax," Anfavea stated. In 2023, compared with the previous year, new vehicle sales grew by 9.7% to 2.3 million, while exports shrank by 16% to 404 thousand units in the same period, as Brazilian automakers lost further ground in the Argentine market, which has been investing more in its domestic production.
