FDI Into Brazil Unexpectedly Falls
Brazil recorded foreign direct investment outflows of $0.389 billion in December 2023, compared to an outflow of $0.479 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, and missing by far market expectations of a $5.85 billion inflow. It marks the first decline in foreign investment into the country in 12 months as intercompany operations experienced a net outflow of $1.313 billion in the month, up from outflows of $291 millions in the previous year. On the other hand, net capital participation recorded a net inflow of $924 millions, following a net outlow of $187 millions in December 2022. Considering full 2023, Brazil received $61.95 billion inflows of foreign direct investments, equivalent to 1.32% of the GDP, firmly under the net $74.61 billion inflow in 2022.

Brazil FDI Unexpectedly Narrow in June
Foreign direct investments in Brazil narrowed sharply to $1.880 billion in June 2023 from $5.228 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, well below market expectations of $6.7 billion. Equity investment shrank to $3.691 billion from $4.073 billion and intercompany operations experienced a net outflow of $1.811 billion, compared with inflows of $1.156 billion. Year-to-date, foreign direct investments into the country were at a net $31.573 billion, firmly under the net $43.055 billion inflow in the first five months of 2022.

Brazil FDI Widens Less than Expected in May
Foreign direct investment into Brazil totaled a net $5.38 billion in May of 2023, widening from $3.397 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year but missing market expectations of $6.59 billion. Intercompany operations experienced a net inflow of $438 million in the month, rebounding from outflows of $1.79 billion from the previous year and offsetting a narrowing in net capital participation ($4.94 billion vs $5.76 billion). Year-to-date, foreign direct investments into the country were at a net $29.69 billion, firmly under the net $37.83 billion inflow in the first five months of 2022.
