The Chicago Business Barometer, also known as the Chicago PMI, fell once again to 41.4 in March 2024 from 44 in the prior month and missing market forecasts of 46. The latest reading indicated that Chicago's economic activity contracted for the fourth consecutive month in March, and to the greatest extent in ten months. Order backlogs slipped 11.4 points to move to similar levels to August 2023 and the third lowest level of the past 15 years. New Orders lessened by 3.4 points to the lowest since September 2023. Production moderated by 0.5 points, the fourth consecutive month on month fall resulting in the lowest level since May 2023. Meanwhile, employment rebounded from last month’s losses, increasing by 6.4 points.
